Now the menu is a bit too pricey and not enough of the simple.

The cheapest meal is the chicken parma which was $28 with too much cheese and ham. My marinara parpadelle was good but I was not up to paying $32 with only a few bits of seafood. The chicken vietnaese salad looked a bit strange.

Very disappointed cos this place was once good and reasonable.

It has been beachified in a bad way.

We were just after a quick feed after a night out of African dancing and drinking. But we were in the area, I heard about Kumo Izakaya, so we gave it a go.

We were in and out in about 20 minutes but managed to eat the chirashi sushi, gyoza, scallops and kingfish sashimi.

All excellent and up there with the likes of Izakaya Den and Kenzan.

Around $60 for 2 with no alcohol.

Will definitely be back for a more comprehensive meal.
But I took a risk and decided to organise a dinner for 10.

My friend ordered and ordered very well.

We ate cabbage with pork, duck, more pork, fish, beef ribs - pretty much every form of meat possible with every form of chilli available and it was all excellent. Plus some tofu for those tofu eaters - not me.

Definitely the best Sichuan in Melbourne, cooked with crisp, and crunch and not very scary.

BYO with cheap corkage. Cost was around $40 per person.

I am often disappointed by Thai restaurants but not this one. There is a mix of traditional, fusion and contemporary Thai food.

The curry here is very good. Green chicken curry was full of great flavour and the beef massaman was melting in the mouth. The fish was all fresh.

Good wine list at decent prices. $55 each including 2 bottles of white wine amongst 5 ladies.

It is an Italian restaurant set in the middle of what seems nowhere on Nicholson Street.

We were there for a mid-week meal so did not do the 3 courses.

First were some zucchini flowers stuffed with ricotta and anchovies fried in a light crisp batter. A good start.

I had rabbit for main which was superb, cooked in a lovely white wine for hours and just melting in the mouth. I heard good things across the table about the goat, pastas and snapper.

Only concern was that the service was a bit pretentious for a suburban restaurant.

Good selection of wines around the $40-$50 mark.

About $40 per person including a bottle of wine amongst six.

Would be more pricey with bigger appetites on a Friday or Saturday night but still very reasonable compared to other good Italian joints around town.
It is not commonly discussed amongst friends maybe because the style is French Bistro but the food is consistently very good.

It is famous for the fried chips cooked maybe twice or three times in goose fat or something like that. Either way they are a heart attack waiting to happen but the best you might have and worth the risk.

The furnishings are ornate and we were very lucky on this evening to sit in a large private dining room. The menu was set for us and I am ok with that when I am not paying.

Everything really was very excellent but my only concern was the disproportionate servings based on the expense of the food.

The entree of smoked trout with toasted brioche was fair in size. The truffle risotto was only 3 mouthfuls or 2 with my mouth - but that is fair cos it is expensive.

But the beef chateaubriand, while excellent, was too small - I had one tiny thin piece of beef the size of half a potato cake. And then we were served the biggest motherf*er creme brulee of all time - lovely but too much.

More meat ploise.

When you order dessert go for the apple tarte tartin. Excellent wines.

Not sure of the cost but I am guessing you could pay anywhere from $80-$120 per head depending on the amount of wine you choose to drink.

Good service too.

Piqueous was just that - very exciting amigos and it expands the Argentinean/Peruvian options in Melbourne.

A great location in North Carlton away from the CBD - I am not a big fan of dining in the CBD generally.

The key feature is the bar in the middle but the place has an overall dark and moody feel to it, just like restaurants in Argentina. Service is immediately warm and friendly but not overdone and the menu is very desirable.

We started with some scallops which were succulent and spicy, followed by the best empanadas around in Melbourne. Then kingfish ceviche with a corn and tomatoe salsa was super.

Next was the steak with chimmichurri. I love chimmchurri and I love the way Argentineans cook steak parilla style - it is the best. On the side was the best asparagus accompanied with palm hearts that you will taste plus some quinoa.

For dessert we shared an Alfajor which is a biscuit filled with dulce de leche and coconut - yum.

Around $80 per person including 2 glasses of wines each or less if you eat less.

Piqueous is a fusion of delicate flavours with the grunt of a good tasty steak and lovely wines.

I love it and for me it beats San Telmo.

In some cases our tastes just change but in the case of Gingerboy either hands have changed or complacency has set in.

First of all our preferred wines were not available and they offered only more expensive bottles to match. A good restaurant will split the difference in price if they can't match the wine on the list.

Complacency - update your wine list or your sommelier please.

The chicken salad was over-flavoured, the snapper was over-cooked and the vegies lacked crisp and crunch.
Complacency - balance your flavours and learn to cook please, I hate holding up beans that flop and don't perform.

The service was way too slow and the bars stools uncomfortable waiting around for half an hour between each course.

Complacency - speed it up, change your seats and put more smiles on your faces please.

Very average for the crazy price of around $150 per person. I won't be back.

Komeyui is the real deal, the most authentic in Melbourne for sure.

We started with sake, a sweet and a dry, pecking on a pickled tuna salad and some tuna rolls.

Flavours were extraordinary.

Then some more sake followed by a plate of sushi and sashimi - definitely the best you will have, perfectly cut, nice fish, scallop, a bit of charring here and there and the most amazing presentation.

And more sake to go with our sweet and spicy fried quail - de lec table

And not to forget the most outstanding chawan mushi which also pairs well with sake.

The only problem? Too many nice dishes to choose from.

Great service, hip atmosphere and $85 per head including lots of sake.

Very excited cos I love it, love it, love it.

Great conversation too with my gal pal.

Even though there had been gun fire in the windows of 3 of these restaurants in the one night that week, I called up and asked if they were open and if they were ok and they said yes, so I said we are going.

Glass was all fixed and the place was busy. Good on the locals who will take a risk for a good pizza.

The parpadelle pasta with sausage was perfection - a simple tomato sauce, homemade pasta - very flavoursome.

I told the fella that we needed some good vino. He asked what vino was and I thought - can't believe I am a blogger with a fella who doesn't know what vino is. And as for a sommelier, well forget it.

Then came the prosciutto pizza with mascarpone, fior di latte and rocket - thin base and hot out of the oven.

The fella is also an admirer of Pizza Hut, not the cheesy crust of course but everything else he thinks is good. I told him never again.

So we were thinking the pizza was excellent, the pasta exceptional so we gotta have dessert.

Pannacotta, a risk cos only 2 outta 10 are good. This was in those 2, thank god (although not as good as my mum's).

Excellent service, friendly, efficient and Nonna walks by each table to say hello - it did not feel like Melbourne underground territory.

Didn't try them this time but you must have the stuffed olives (although not as good as mine).

Breakfast here is an institution and dinner, which was on this eve, is quite good.

A lot of variety on the menu - pizza, pasta, meats etc.

We shared a bit of everything and it was all tasty and well cooked.

Around $35 each with a glass of wine.

Started off modern with blue tiles and ok food.

Then middle eastern decor was introduced with no middle Eastern food - weird and unmemorable.

Then it became a premier place for coffe made by good barristas with atomica beans - and still is great.

Now it serves surprisingly good pasta. The best I have had for a while. We tried the lovely rabbit cooked in wine on the bone with taglioni pasta house made. Al dente, melt in the mouth meat with a beautiful juice. We also shared paradelle with braised lamb and broad beans, just simple and oustsanding.

But above all, always a place with space and no pretention for a good after work drink.

Pasta is around $26, very good value.

Clever concept to have affordable food in town that tastes good amongst business people where budgets are getting tight and for pre theatre goers who want a touch of class.

Everything at Shanghai Dynastry is top notch.

I call it ornate and decadent. The boys say it is looks like you are stepping back into an 80s bond film but does not quite feel like it. That nuance appears to be very important.

Everything that came out on the turn table was excellent. The dumplings, the pork ribs, the taro fried balls stuffed with pork. It pays to have a couple of Chinese or Malaysian friends at the table.

Then the waiter offered some greens. With women it would have been a resounding yes. With boys it was stunned silence as if, why did you even ask?

And then more banter. The talk and fear of bromance, the importance of eating meat at every meal, the mango pudding that keeps them going back reminding them of the ice cream man from childhood playing Greensleaves and how paying a $3.50 tip is not appropriate for lunch time yum cha.

And on and on and on.

$25 each including a $3.50 tip.

The atmosphere is warm and eclectic, much more so than any other restaurant in the CBD of Melbourne.

The menu is simple, some antipasto, a few pastas, a few mains and a few desserts. That is all you need if the food is good - and it is - very.

We started with some buffalo mozzarella drizzled with fresh anchovy and oil and a bit of fennel - lovely.

Then followed with a plate of antipasto.

We then shared home made ricotta ravioli and pasta with veal shank.

Cooked al dente and tasty.

Reasonably priced wine - $55 for a nice Italian red.

And the desserts - oh my. The three cheese strawberry tart was sensational and the home made canoli was the best around town.

Service was sensational.

Around $80 with a generous tip.
A place he had been to pre-me - and I must admit I was a bit dubious because he has proclaimed that I have since opened up his world to food.

I was very pleasantly surprised.

Lulos which is a mix of Spanish and South American, dishes up some very tasty food.

The service is very cheerio and so is the atmosphere - very South American.

We started with oysters which were the only disappointing dish for me - too salty.

But the rest was very good.

The snapper ceviche was delicate and had a bundle of different citrus and chilli flavours.

The globe artichokes croquetas with black garlic aioli were crunchy on the outside and moist and flavoursome inside.

Quinoa had a lot of punch and the squid was cooked perfectly.

I will return for sure.

I like it a lot.

Mr Hotaru-San.

This is a sushi train place like no other. You order on a touch screen and it is ready set go. The dishes come charging at you like samurai swords.

The quality of the fish on the nigiri is superb and the combination of flavours and textures are to die for.

Whether it is tuna with a touch of caviar, seared salmon, spicy tuna or even the soft shell cab and egg in a hand roll - it is all sooooo good.

But the hero is the nigiri seared scallop - hands down below zero - succulent and so fresh and you could eat thousands of them.

And best of all it is hidden up an out the back, by the side door location on Bourke street.

Mr Hotaru-San has many lovers however so let's just hope he continues to perform.

About $20 each including a soft drink.

For the price and what you get, this deserves
Maybe hands have changed and chefs have moved on cos my fish was chewy and the place was empty.

Not great for a $30 lunch. Would prefer a sandwich.

The skin on our flounder was oily and fatty.

The beef hor fun had barely any beef.

I can't eat bad food no matter how cheap.

312 Drummond Street has had many restaurants and for me this is the least favourite.

The bread came with a seaweed butter - strange but not that pleasurable.

The Coffin Bay oysters were nice and salty.

The slow cooked lamb shoulder was good but a bit on the dry side, not as good as Cumulus.

Our side of cabbage with prunes was just a bit rich and too salty.

The service is good but as a restaurant it was a bit same old same old and not executed as well as others.

The lamb shank pasta is simple and melty in the mouth and homely.

And the pizzasvare very good - thin base, simple toppings and good quality fior di latte.

The atmosphere is lovely and feels like you are at home, including the weatherboard walls with windows.
We sit down and one pulls a dummy out of her bra.

This is the night I was in for.

Tien Dat seems to be the place to be in Box Hill. Pumping with people.

A very tempting menu.

We started with some Hanoi style spring rolls. A third of the price of coda and 10 times better.

Next was meat in betel leaf and then fried prawns with chilli and coriander. Very tasty.

Fried duck with plum sauce was not for the faint hearted.

And cheap - $30 each including corkage for a bottle of $4.50.

Good o.

It started with Chinese, then Thai, then Vietnamese and now it is Malaysian. Although Shanghai dumplings are still in the mix and not sure where Japanese food sits in his timeline of events.

Mamak is excellent. Always full of people and the food is cooked very well.

A variety of different and chewy and not oily too roti.

Satays are the same as in Malaysia, a fattier meat and not too meaty. Sounds bad but it is actually good.

The nasi lemak and slow cooked lamb are so tasty that you just want more.

Loved it.

The menu has many Japanese regulars - gyoza, sushi and miso eggplant.

It won't set your world on fire but I don't think you need that on a Tuesday night.
Staff were a bit disinterested.
